If you are a beach connoisseur like we are, the island of Holbox, no doubt, has one of the most gorgeous beaches in the world. With its shallow, crystal clear water, comfortable temperature, and perfect spots for an Instagram pic, Holbox is the place to go… but it's a mission to get there (and has a few other cons). Like any place you travel to, there are pros and cons to any destination. We want to share those with you and give you our best advice to make your journey there the best it can be.
Pros:
Picturesque beaches, turquoise waters, and most importantly - Sargasso (seaweed) free!
Off the beaten path feel with its sandy roads and the only transportation around the island are golf carts and bicycles.
Cool, off-the-grid, laid-back atmosphere.
Plenty of activities such as whale sharks (when it's the season, May through September), fishing, snorkeling, and kayaking.
Plenty of options for places to stay. You can check out the hotels we offer - or ask us to contact any other hotel for our exclusive rates.
Shops, restaurants, and beach clubs galore!
Tons of amazing places to get the best photos to make all your friends and family jealous!
Cons:
Holbox is mosquito heaven!!! Don’t forget bug repellent and stay inside around dusk to avoid their munching hour. Winter months like December, January, and February have the least amount of mosquitos.
Restaurants are a little on the pricey side, especially on the beach but you can find cheaper places to eat in the center of town. TIP - Be sure to check the bill when it comes time to pay! Most places include the tip (propina in Spanish) in the total.
When it rains…. IT RAINS! Unpaved, pothole-ridden roads can be unpleasant trying to navigate across the island especially after a rainstorm. Since the only transportation is via golf cart, if you have a bad back it's probably best to stay as close to the center. This puts you within walking distance of everything.
Be sure to take water shoes! This makes the always flooded streets easier and safer to walk.
It’s a bit of a mission to get there, but we can make it easy for you, see below.
Getting there:
Rental Car
- From Cancun Airport to Chiquila ferry - Holbox (link to map) Approx 2 hours
- From Playa del Carmen to Holbox (link to map) Approx 1.45 hours
- From Tulum to Holbox (link to map) Approx 2.5 hours
Sometimes renting a car is great because you can stop along the way and try out some local food or find a good buy, but if you aren't familiar with roads and driving in Mexico you might find yourself in a pickle.
ADO Bus -
The ADO is a large bus and even though it is comfortable you are with many other people and the time to arrive is much longer.
LET US TAKE YOU THERE!!!
The easiest, most hassle-free, and cost-effective way to get there is with us! Not only can we arrange transportation from where you are staying in the Riviera Maya, but the price also includes the FERRY from Chiquila to the island. Not only that but there will also be a golf cart taxi waiting to pick you up and take you to your accommodations (included in the price)!
Ferry….? Yes, well it is an island. The ferry runs about every 30 minutes to and from the island.
We’ve been traveling around the Yucatán to hand-pick the best places to stay and the best places to see. Since we’ve been there and done that, we can offer the best advice to our clients. We can help you plan your getaway to the island from beginning to end. Check out our photo albums of some of our adventures and let us help you plan the vacation of your dreams to PARADISE!
